Why Serve? Three Reasons to Enlist in the Army

Before you start, are you looking for a job in the British army?  You need ArmyJobs.mod.uk

More than at any point in history the future of young adults is not decided by chance or fate.  A young adult from even the most deprived home has a greater range of choice than ever before in choosing the course of their life.  However, we understand that this freedom of choice can often become overwhelming.

The difficulty, then, is in making the right choice.  Here we’ll discuss the benefits of one of those choices: enlisting in the Army.

Patriotism

“These are the times that try men’s souls.  The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country.” — Thomas Paine.

As children, we were all taught about the virtues of patriotism.  We learned about it in a purely hypothetical sense: love your country; defend its values; protect its future.  By enlisting in the armed forces, however, you’ll get the chance to put those abstract lessons into practice.

Patriots – true patriots – will defend their country to their final breath.  By choosing a career in the armed forces - no matter how small a part you play, whether it’s fighting on the front lines, providing tactical support to the troops or simply cooking their meals - your actions will give you the right to call yourself a true patriot.

Training

“An army marches on its stomach.”  — Napoleon Bonaparte

While an army may march on its stomach, it succeeds on its intelligence.  The modern Army invests as much into education as it does into military training.  In choosing a career in the armed forces you will open doors to all sorts of educational opportunities you would not otherwise have access to: college degrees, language courses – most importantly, you’ll learn a trade that you can make use of in your civilian life.

The armed forces need quick-witted, intelligent men and women in order to succeed. The better educated a soldier is, the more effective that soldier will become.

Growth

“Weapons are an important factor in war, but not the decisive one; it is man and not materials that counts.” — Mao Tse-tung

Let’s make no bones about it.  A career in the Army will be hard.  You’ll face greater obstacles and more difficult challenges then you would ever expect to face in civilian life.  However, these challenges will help you to grow, adapt and improve.  You’ll learn how to work as part of a team.   You’ll learn to lead others.  You’ll learn how to push yourself further than you ever thought possible.  You will come out the other side a stronger, better and more competent person.

We can’t cover all the benefits of enlisting in the armed forces here.  In fact, the greatest benefits of enlisting can’t be expressed in words at all.  There are no words that can describe the feeling of serving your country – of protecting its values both home and abroad, in the knowledge that you are helping ensure the safety and prosperity of your nation for future generations.  These words could not do that experience justice.  To know what we’re talking about, you’ll have to find out for yourself.  Good luck, soldier.
